On November 20th 2023, the first homes in the village of Wagenborgen (Groningen) were connected to the newly developed hydrogen network of the Hydrogen Neighbourhood Wagenborgen pilot. The houses participating in this project will henceforth be heated by our hybrid heat pump in combination with our hydrogen boiler. The combination of a hybrid heat pump with hydrogen is being applied for the first time.
In recent years, various parties have worked hard on the pilot project. The necessary infrastructure has been installed and the homes have been made more sustainable. This has been done through insulation and solar panels. The homes have an Intergas Xplore hydrogen boiler that works with our hybrid heat pump, the Intergas Xtend. The heat pump provides the majority of the heat demand, the hydrogen boiler kicks in on very cold days and takes care of the domestic hot water.
The project is a great example of what the hybrid route looks like in practice, according to Gerrit Zijlstra, Project Manager Hydrogen & Innovation at Intergas. “With a hybrid heat pump, you can save up to 70 or 80% on your gas consumption. In this project, we completely replace the remaining gas demand with our hydrogen hybrid with green hydrogen. This demonstrates that the hybrid route is a final solution for the sustainability of homes. In this project, a hydrogen hybrid is being applied on this scale for the first time in the world. The boiler contains the latest technology with unique hydrogen flame monitoring. This 100% hydrogen boiler, in combination with a hybrid heat pump, is Intergas’ latest innovation.
